Shiva Rea Advanced Teacher Training Day 4 - part 2

Saved to Ifer by Jennifer Fawcett Thursday January 26, 2006

This afternoons class felt like it brought it all together even more so than yesterday. Shiva was incredibly spontaneous all afternoon, and began with a body-rolling vinyasa. We literally got into ourselves by rolling around on our back, just being free for 5 minutes. It was beautiful. Then, some chanting, and we were ready to absorb again. I must say, I was getting fatigued, but this mini-free-form vinyasa helped a bunch.

We reviewed all the Dancing Warrier Series (a Shiva original), and how the vinyasas all build upon themselves to a peak pose. She’s giving us all the tools to become our own original. It’s a great style of teaching.

After break, Shiva gave us a little taste of the Yoga Trance Dance tomorrow night. We all jumped up, and free-formed danced to some great drumming music. She brought the wave up and down three times. Three’s a key…

But, the peak 1-1/2 hour vinyasa happened this afternoon in Shiva’s Santa Monica class.

She commanded a completely free-formed, on-the-spot Thursday evening class that focused on inversions, and backbends. The most fascinating part was that there were absolutely NO CHATARUNGAs. What a relief, and an amazing task. I think we only did one or two downward dogs. And, she ended the class with an amazing shavasana coupled with the gong.

Tomorrow…more…

Clearly, today my mind is taking over, because my body is sending signals of being physically tired. One thing great about having the bike is that I have a freedom to go whenever I want. The one thing not so great, is that I have to push it with my physical body, and my mind-body is telling me I’m tired.

My morning meditation still needs more mind attention. I love the beginning, where we touch and massage our bodies to awaken them. And the chanting opens up our inner organs. I can get through about the first 12 minutes, before I start to peak one eye open, then the other, maybe wiggle my spine, and roll my neck. This was another sign of my mind playing tricks, as it did all morning’s practice. I took all my chataurangas on my knees, so that I can rest that mind (and body) .

We ended with another too-short savasana, and the tidbit that tomorrow, we’ll spend more time in savasana and inversions. Oh boy…

Shiva Rea Advanced Teacher Training Day 3

This morning’s meditation was blissful. What a nice transition into our 2 hour morning yoga practice. This morning’s practice brought on my inner heat, all spawned by many sets of dancing warrier series. Savasana proved to be too short…

This afternoon’s practice began with a Vinyasa Krama with special guest Srivasta Ramaswami. With his bare feet, nice slacks, button down shirt, and a white sweater vest, he began with a beautiful chant, and then lead us through dozens of poses for Tadasana. There are over 1000 variations of Tadasana. To close, he took us through the sanscrit alphabet, and then another beautiful chant. What an honor to have him come to our class.

From there, the entire class took a pilgrimage to Lake Shrine, a beautiful ten-acre natural amphitheater that was made public in 1950 by Paramahansa Yogananda. This beautiful meditative spot brought back some dear memories of my mom, purely through the vibrant smells of the lush plantlife and sounds of the birds. I found a nice spot in the sun, and just sat in peace and presence.

This was followed by another beautiful hike into the Santa Monica mountains with the entire class. After that, Shiva fed us all with an Ayuvedic dinner at her lovely house.

I have to stop and say how amazed I am at her pure energy. Tuesday, she lead our class all day, went surfing during our morning break, and then taught another public class after our all day teacher intensive training. Today, she lead our morning class, went home and cooked for over 30 people, went on the hike with us, ate with us, and then showed no fatigue at out 6:30 meditation. I think I have to get onto this Ayevedic diet…

The other part of this journey to LA is to learn as much about the yoga experience as possible. So, I decided to take a class to the Santa Monica ExhaleSpa. To my disbelief, there is Santa Monica Power Yoga Studio…RIGHT NEXT DOOR! Granted, there are different offerings, but, the 6pm class at ExhaleSpa Santa Monica only had 7 participants. Sometime towards the end of the week I will summarize my thoughts on yoga as a business.

Beyond all that, both Exhale Spas studios are gorgeous. One thing that is just beyond my comprehension is that there are no LOCKER ROOMS! The spa has beautiful facilities, but not for just yoga participants. We literally have women in the bathroom, asses to elbows, changing in and out of their gear, sometimes with no showers at all. I’m still floored that owners take the time to develop unbelievably wonderful studio environments, but neglect the before and after experience. No offense to these beautiful studios. I guess the market will bare (literally) no locker rooms in yoga studios. After over 25 years of fitness experience, this still amazes me.

More on day three.

Fortunately, this day started to bring the Shiva practice techniques all together. There were no light outages, I slept, and was ready to start pedaling to the studio at 6am this morning.

We began the practice with 12 minutes of meditation. The goal is to get to 30 minutes. My meditation started with peace for the first, about 5 minutes. But then my hips started to get sore, and I lost my focus. That was where I was today. More tomorrow. Meditation is a practice, and for me it may take the rest of my life.

This morning’s yoga practice was a series of mini-vinyasas, and full vinyases. The Shiva flow is coming together, with the three-part vinyasa technique. Part one: Pulsation Vinyasa – guided or coupled by breath; Part two: Body Vinyasa – using the limbs, torso, legs, and the body to guide the body to it’s proper alignment and awaken prana, Part three: Rhythmic Vinyasa – the art of connecting two or more related asanas in a continuous flow to cultivate the circulation of prana.

All this, is the beauty of Shiva Rae. Yoga becomes a beautiful dance sequence.

This afternoon brought more beauty. Instead of a book, she gave us the tools and guidance to develop our own mini-vinyasas and vinyasa series of our own.

Day 2 – 1st day of training, due at studio in Venice at 6:30am

Saved to Ifer by Jennifer Fawcett Tuesday January 24, 2006

At about 1am this morning, the power went out due to a windstorm. I didn’t worry, as I used my cell phone alarm to get up. But the wind did keep me up most of the evening. At 5am, there was still no power. Still not worried, I managed to get everything together that I needed. BUT, when I opened the door, I realized, I was on the 4th floor, and didn’t know where the stairs were! After pacing up and down the hallway with my bike, I was slowly becoming a caged rat. Panic was setting in. The sole reason I am here is for YOGA! I needed to get to the ground so I could start pedaling to the studio.

After panicking for at least 10 minutes, I decided to open my hotel room door and look at the emergency map on the inside of the door. Mainly, because I had a fear that my electronic key lock wouldn’t work because of the outage! I must have been making a racket, because the gentleman next door opened his door. He definitely could sense my panic, and asked me if I had a cell phone. But, not for the obvious reason. The light from the cell phone gave off just enough that we could see where the stairs were on the map from the back of my door. But, the stairs were PITCH DARK too. How can I navigate a heavy “cruiser” bike down four flights of PITCH DARK stairs? The light of the cell phone also gave off enough to get me down to ground level. What a blessing…Cell phones…make good FLASHLIGHTS!

After pedaling like mad, down all foreign turf,I arrived at the studio at 6:25, not grounded, at peace, or present.

We began with meditation. This proved to be very hard (only for me…), as I just could not get present. But, eventually, Shiva brought me in to my presence through her voice, her tone, and her aura. It wasn’t until after I became present that I could notice my surroundings, and that Simon Park was helping with the class.

Shiva Rae is incredibly animated. She communicates through her mind, body, and spirit. Truly, it comes from her heart.

The morning was chanting, and getting to know each other. Students from around the world (Mexico, Sweden, Germany…), all for different reasons. Many are from the San Diego area, and Santa Monica. Those students are helping me with the CA culture…which still frightens me. The ones that are in Shiva’s class because they love surfing, were truly speaking from the heart. These folks live for the moment, the experience of the moment, and embracing the moment. Some may feel this is flighty or without responsibility, but I’m starting to believe in the life of YOGA, which is inheritently hard for me to give it all up for one trade, or philosophy.

Mini vinyasas, getting into the flow all afternoon. This day was so full of information that I left feeling completely overwhelmed, and also feeling like one week with Shiva Rae is just not enough. She is so full of YOGA, it’s roots, the Sanskrit, the mental and physiological (I almost typed “physiomagical”) benefits, that I feel humbled to spend this time. By the end of the week, we should have over 10 vinyasas we can architect into our own Vinyasa Flow.

This week is completely full. Shiva invited us to go surfing with her and her surf coach Thursday morning. I think I may take her up on it…This experience certainly won’t happen anytime soon again.

I finalized the day with an hour-1/2 class with Shiva from 7:30-9pm tonight. I’m glad I got a jumpstart on seeing how she pieces it all together.

More tomorrow… (excuse the typos…it’s been YOGA from 6:30-9pm today)

Embodying the Flow, Advanced Teacher Training with Shiva Rea, Santa Monica, Day 1

Saved to Ifer by Jennifer Fawcett Tuesday January 24, 2006

Arrived in Santa Monica (AKA: MARS for someone from Boulder, CO). Found my way around just fine. I’m staying right on Ocean Blvd in Santa Monica, across from the Pier. You really can’t miss that landmark.

I decided to run down to Venice to find the Studio. It was about a 15 minute jog. Along the way, I priced our bikes to rent for the week. I scored a pink and white “cruiser” 7-speed bike for $60 for the week. What a bargain. Found the grocery store, bananas, oranges, and apples for breakfast should do just fine. I’m well prepared for the week…so I think…

Bush Yoga - Just for Fun

Saved to Ifer by Jennifer Fawcett Tuesday January 17, 2006

Because my work involves a ton of web research, I stumbled across this Bush Yoga website. This link is “just for fun!”, and I’m sharing it because it makes me smile (for many reasons). And, it does give you a nice demonstration of the basic yoga asanas.

I hope to have my own Ifer doll some day.

Enjoy!

Yoga, Entrepreneurship, and Happiness

Saved to Ifer by Jennifer Fawcett Saturday January 14, 2006

As I reflect on the past year, it has become clear that I experience the most happiness and joy when I am working for myself. Not that I don’t like teams, people, or bosses (well, the bosses may honestly be part of it), it’s just that I know why I like to work, when I like to work, and how I like to work.

So, with this new year, I have decided to go back to being an entrepreneur. What does this mean? Well, teaching Yoga is half of the mix. I have accepted a position teaching mentally disabled adults yoga at a local rehabilitation center. This should prove to challenge and extend my teacher skills, as well as my love and patience of the practice. I am extremely excited. I have also just recently registered for a week long advanced teacher training with Shiva Rae in LA at the end of January. Adding her viniyoga and “trance dance” techniques to my practice will be a wonderful part of the overall journey.

The other half is to rekindle my web development business: www.routesix.com. My partner Blake and I have developed a new focus and strategy, that should help make our customers websites wildly successful.

New year, new goals, new presence.

Our Journey Ending…and just beginning

Saved to Ifer by Jennifer Fawcett Saturday November 19, 2005

Hello this is Isa, I am a little sad that our yoga journey together is
ending, it seemed to fly by. Of all the things I didn’t say because of
supposed tommorows. I am grateful for the opportunity. IT will be cherished
along with all you as my inspiration. Each pose we endured together, always
building on our foundation, took us through to know ourselves better. I have
no doubt that all of you will be great teachers.
